Dating someone from a different culture is an interesting and exciting experience, but it can sometimes be difficult due to the inevitable cultural barriers. To Western men, Chinese girls may seem mysterious and alluring because their rich cultural heritage makes them quite distinct in their way of life or behavior. To successfully date a Chinese woman requires certain knowledge about Chinese culture. For example, here are the things you should never do when taking your Chinese girl out on the first date.

Don’t be too serious. Be a bit naughty and funny. Throw in unexpected mischievous remarks to leave her wondering if you just said that. Although you do need to talk about serious topics when you’re dating, it’s important to keep the conversation pleasant and casual on the first date. Ask about hobbies and interests instead of taboo subjects like religion, politics, or money.

Don’t talk about your past romance. This is a big no-no. Save the spicy stories about your one night stands for your friends. Most Chinese women have very traditional ideas about casual sex.   So if you have a history of short-term romance, it’s best not to mention it. On the other hand, if your ex-girlfriend is all you can think to talk about on a date, maybe you’re not quite ready for dating yet. Take time to get over your last relationship before embarking on the next one.

Don’t go Dutch. Modern dating etiquette in the Western world says that whoever proposes the date pays for the date, but in China things are different. In China, “going Dutch” in a restaurant and offering money in public will be viewed as rude, and the person will “lose face”. For Chinese people, “Face” is a very important aspect of life. So don’t even think about sharing the bill with your Chinese girl on the first date. Otherwise, there will be no second date for you!

Don’t overwhelm her with premature physical contact. Remember, most Chinese women are much more conservative than their Western counterparts when it comes to sex and intimacy. In the Chinese culture, it is regarded very rude and vulgar to discuss sex overtly. So always be respectful. On a first date, hand holding, hugging and kissing is a taboo for most Chinese women, especially the older ones. If you don’t want to take the time and effort needed to build a serious long-term relationship, then maybe you shouldn’t date a Chinese woman. If you believe she’s worth it, be sensitive, caring and patient.
